Dutch Apple Pie

This morning I got up extra early to get a head start on baking something delicious for the weekend. Today, I decided to make my Dutch apple pie recipe since I had a lot of apples that I wanted to use up before restocking with fresh ones since they are currently on sale. Unlike a regular apple pie that has two crusts to it, this version has a bottom crust and a tasty crumb topping of brown sugar, butter and flour.

Something that I like to do is use the microwave to briefly cook the filling to help the apples along. I don’t know about you, but this method does help the diced apples to tenderize more evenly instead of finding some spots where the apples may be harder in places and softer in another.

I always use my oil pie crust recipe for dessert pies, quiche, pot pies to tarts as I mentioned in previous posts. I also like to bake big 10-inch pies and my crust can accommodate that or if you prefer a nine-inch crust then the crust will just be a little thicker, but just as flaky as delicious.

Honestly, the hardest part of my Dutch apple pie recipe is peeling and dicing all the apples. If you’re planning to make a smaller nine-inch pie, then nine to 10 apples should be enough along with two tablespoons of flour instead of three in the filling.

Like I said, my oil pie crust couldn’t be easier to make. Do not be afraid of working with what feels like a greasy ball of dough that you’ll just pat down into your greased pie pan. Seriously, you will not be disappointed and surprised at how tender and wonderful this crust is in comparison to how finicky a regular shortening pie crust can be.

The next time that you feel like baking something sweet and delicious, I hope that you will print out my Dutch apple recipe and test it out for yourself. You also may want to try my never fail apple pie, apple custard pie and apple sour cream pie recipes.

Dutch Apple Pie Recipe

10-inch unbaked pie shell (use my oil pie crust recipe)
Filling Ingredients:
10-12 peeled, medium size apples diced in small pieces (depending on the size of your apples)
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
3 tablespoons of flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Topping Ingredients:
2/3 cup unsifted flour + 1 tablespoon
1/3 cup light brown sugar, firmly packaged
1/3 cup butter

Prepare the pie shell and insert it into a greased 10-inch pie pan. I like to keep it in a glass pie pan and refrigerate until ready to use.

After preparing the apples, I like to microwave the diced apples and filling ingredients for about five minutes.

Next, I make the topping by combining the flour, brown sugar and butter rubbing the mixture together until making coarse crumbs.

Then I prepare to assemble the pie by depositing the slightly cooked apple filling mixture into the unbaked pie shell before adding the topping.

Bake the pie at 350-degrees for 30 minutes or until the apples are tender.

ENJOY!
